Buncombe County Friends of Ag Breakfast is a complimentary local food breakfast featuring an agriculture related speaker, that is open to the public. We typically serve local sausage, bacon, eggs, preserves, hot sauce, vegetables and fruit from local farms!

Local farmers Joe and Linda Brittain will highlight tailgate markets and their importance to our local economy. Drawing on their experience developing the Mills River Farmer's Market, we'll learn about the importance of markets to the local economy, the benefits to the farmer and the shopper, where to find markets, and how to get involved. Brittain Farms is a 7th generation family farm located in beautiful Mills River, specializing in poultry, both meat and eggs, as well as seasonal vegetables.

Description: Overview: Session 10 provides exposure to the history, strategies and issues around buying and owning farmland. Students will learn about land conservation options and land trusts. Participants will learn how to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their property, and will consider alternatives to buying and better understand advantages/disadvantages to alternative land access options. Participants will be introduced to how to approach farm design and land assessment. 



Learning objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Discuss the basic considerations for buying and leasing farmland

Explain how land access fits with their farm plan

Describe land access resources in the region

Explain land assessment/management decision making & resources in the region

Have a basic understanding of how to approach farm design
Have a context for land loss and discrimination in relation to land and people of color

Agenda:

6:00-6:30 pm – Welcome, homework review on readings on land loss and discrimination in communities of color

6:30- 7:15 pm – Working with Land Trusts and land linking agencies(SAHC and NC Farm Link) Chris Link and William Hamilton

7:15- 8:45 pm - Land assessment and design Shawn Jadrnick

8: 45- 9:00 pm- Wrap up
