Lakeview Pecans' Ben Byrd watches pecans roll down the conveyor as he waits to cull out the cracked shells.Through a collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA & CS) will award over $6.2 million to NC producers through a new Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) Program for projects that build resilience across the middle of the supply chain. This program was designed to enhance and strengthen the food supply chain within local and regional food systems, foster economic growth, and create new opportunities for NC’s food producers.

“Investments through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program will create new and expanded local market opportunities which will improve farm income, create good paying jobs and build greater resilience in our overall food system,” shared Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “This partnership between USDA and NC is allowing critical funding to reach areas of the supply chain that need it most,” added USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt. “We are excited to leverage this $6.2 million in federal funding to improve the food supply chain for consumers, agribusinesses and farmers,” said NC Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

Projects funding should expand capacity for the collection, processing, manufacturing, storing, transporting, wholesaling, and distribution of food products, including specialty crops, dairy, grains for human consumption, aquaculture, and other food products, other than meat and poultry. Applications serving smaller farms and ranches, new and beginning farmers and ranchers, underserved producers, veteran producers, and/or underserved communities are also strongly encouraged. Agricultural producers or processors, non-profit organizations, local government entities, tribal governments, and institutions such as schools, universities, or hospitals are all eligible to apply.
